4.4 Tests.
4.4.1 Purity. Prepare and measure the absorbance of a maximum standard and minumum
standard for the blue and red standard dyes, and a Voilet Dye Mix specimen solution as follows:
(a) Standard solution. Dissolve applicable amounts of standard dyes specified in table II in
ethanol or isopropanol in a 500 milliliter (mL) volumetric flask. Dilute to the mark with alcohol
and mix thoroughly. Pipet a 10 mL aliquot into a 250 mL volumetric flask, dilute to the volume
mark with alcohol and mix thoroughly.
(b) Specimen solution. Prepare a solution of the specimen in ethanol or isopropanol by substi-
tuting 0.3200 g of the specimen for the standard dyes in table III and proceeding as specified in
(a).
(c) Standard solution. Using a suitable recording spectrophotometer, record the absorbance
curves of the two standard solutions prepared in (a) from 350 to 700 (NM) nanometers. Use the
alcohol used for preparing the standard solutions as the reference liquid in the spectrophotom-
eter. Using the same instrument and balancing used for the standard solutions, record the ab-
sorbance of the specimen prepared in (b) from 350 to 700(nm). The absorbance shall fall
between the maximum standard solution curve and the minimum standard solution curve.

4.4.2 Particle size. Particle size analysis shall be performed using the laser diffraction meth-
od outlined below. Particle size analysis and histogram are required with material certification.
1.
SAMPLE PREPARATION:
A. Weigh approximately 0.2 Grams (200 mg) of dye sample into a 30 mL beaker. Add 25
mL deionized water to the dye sample.
B. Add 1 or 2 drops of surfactant into the dye/water mixture.
C. Place an external ultrasonic probe (Sonics 130 watt) in the dye sample mixture. Soni-
cate the sample mixture for 2 minutes at 100% power setting.
